Top Best Bakery is an unassuming, old-school Chinese bakery on Burwood Road. Despite often being drawn to the trendier shops nearby, we decided to stop in one day to see if they sold egg tarts. To our delight, they did.

We generally prefer flaky pastry egg tarts, but the taste and texture of these shortcrust pastry egg tarts impressed us as exceptional value for money. The pastry was thin and crisp, with a rich, savoury buttery quality that contrasted beautifully with the mellow sweetness of the smooth egg custard. With bakeries like Emperor’s Garden Cake & Bakery now charging $3.70 for a single egg tart, these have become our go-to replacements. We have returned numerous times for these delicious tarts.
