A tried a selection of Vietnamese desserts ($10.00 for 3 boxes, $12.00 for 4 boxes)
Bánh chuối hấp (literally “steamed banana cake”)
This dessert had a pleasantly restrained sweetness, allowing the fresh, ripe banana flavour to shine. The bouncy texture of the yellow cake contrasted nicely with the softness of the banana, while the sesame seeds provided a subtle nutty crunch. The creamy coconut sauce added richness, bringing the elements together in a surprisingly enjoyable combination.
Bánh bò nướng (literally “cow cake,” named for its resemblance to a cow’s stomach lining)
This version was unexpectedly dry and dense, lacking the characteristic springy and moist interior. Both the crust and the crumb were firmer than expected, suggesting it may have been a little stale. Of the three desserts, this was the most disappointing.
Bánh da lợn (literally “lumpy skin cake”)
The pandan layers were soft and elastic, carrying a mellow grassy vanilla aroma, while the mung bean layers were smooth and subtly sweet with a creamy, delicate bean flavour. The contrast in both colour and taste between the layers was well-balanced, and the textural variation made for a more engaging bite. The layers remained intact without separating, which is a mark of well-made bánh da lợn. This was unexpectedly enjoyable and the standout of the three.
Overall, the desserts were a mix of hits and misses, but we would consider returning to try other items.
