This is the Nippon Yell Gummy Aomori Sekaiichi Apple, featuring juice derived from Sekaiichi apples grown in Aomori Prefecture. First released in Japan in 1974, the Sekaiichi (lit. “world’s number one”) is among the largest apple cultivars, typically measuring 30 to 46 cm in circumference and weighing approximately 900 grams. A hybrid of ‘Red Delicious’ and ‘Golden Delicious’, this variety is known for its juiciness and sweetness, though it lacks the crisp texture found in other cultivars.
Each gummy measured approximately 2 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height, with a translucent golden yellow appearance and a distinct sweet apple aroma. On tasting, the surface presented a firm, bouncy texture that yielded easily to a softer, jelly-like centre. The apple flavour emerged immediately with a mellow juiciness that deepened mid-bite into a richer, subtly floral sweetness. Continued chewing released a more vibrant and refreshing apple note from the outer layer.
The flavour profile was layered and nuanced: bright and juicy without becoming overly sweet, and notably fresh despite the absence of pronounced acidity. While the gummy format avoided the crispness that the fresh fruit lacks, it succeeded in capturing the best aspects of the apple’s natural sweetness and fragrance. A well-executed apple gummy, and one worth repurchasing.
