Gamza Batt, Lidcombe

Gamza Batt (lit. “potato field” in Korean) is well-known for its potato bread in Korea. The version now available at Kmall09 (in the same spot previously occupied by Brown Born Bakery) uses potatoes from Gangwondo, a region noted for its high potato production.

Each bread was shaped like a brushed potato, measuring around 7 cm in diameter. Sold at room temperature rather than warm, they carried little aroma.

Serving instructions were provided for reheating and storage. A 10% discount was available for purchases of ten, packaged in a quaint cardboard box styled like a produce tray. A purchase of four, however, came in smaller box without discount.

When microwaved (700W for 2 minutes), the surface puffed up with bubbles before collapsing once removed. The exterior became chewy and stretchy, resembling mochi, while the interior of mashed potato delivered a rich potato flavour with natural sweetness and savoury depth. The mochi-like exterior gave it a dessert-like quality without being overly sweet.

When baked in the oven (190°C for 18 minutes), the bread again puffed up, but the crust remained crisp while holding its shape. This provided a savoury outer layer with both crispness and chewiness, balanced against the light, fluffy potato interior. The flavour was rich and gently sweet, offering a more complex texture than the microwaved version.

Overall, the potato bread offered a novel balance of savoury and sweet, with the oven-baked method best showcasing its textures and flavours.
