Japan 2024 – Day 13: Tōkyō – Yanaka & Ikebukuro

Tōkyō spans a range of neighbourhoods that shift quickly in tone, from the rail-side pragmatism of Yurakuchō to the preserved, low-rise character of Yanaka and the dense commercial energy of Ikebukuro. This post documents our time in these areas.

Taito — Yanaka

Yanaka centres on a quieter, older Tōkyō, with temple precincts and narrow residential streets that retain a pre-war scale and pace. The area supports a dense cluster of small, independent food shops and crafts, giving it a strong neighbourhood identity anchored in everyday routines.

Nakanoya

Nakanoya operates as a traditional delicatessen, offering prepared dishes typical of Japanese home-style cooking, arranged for takeaway.

Yanaka Ginza

Yanaka Ginza is a short, sloping shopping street lined with tightly packed vendors, known for its street food, small grocers, and casual takeaway culture. The atmosphere builds toward sunset, when foot traffic increases and the street takes on a more communal, local feel.

Zakuro

3 Chome−13−2 , Nishinippori, Arakawa City, 116-0013 Tōkyō, Japan

Zakuro operates as a hybrid dining space serving Turkish, Uzbek, and Persian cuisine, with a menu structured around grilled meats, rice dishes, and shared plates. The interior is densely decorated with woven carpets, low seating, and textiles, with periodic belly-dancing performances introducing a performative, communal rhythm to the space.

Shinimonogurui

邪悪なハンコ屋 しにものぐるい, 3 Chome-11-15 Yanaka, Taito City, Tōkyō 110-0001, Japan

Shinimonogurui specialises in personalised hanko, producing custom stamps carved with names or short phrases in a range of scripts and styles. Orders are typically completed on-site, with customers selecting typeface, size, and layout, resulting in a functional object with a strong individual imprint.

Himitsudō

ひみつ堂, 3 Chome-11-18 Yanaka, Taito City, Tōkyō 110-0001, Japan

Himitsudō was closed at the time of visit. It typically functions as a high-demand destination during warmer periods. We previously enjoyed their kakigōri in Tōkyō Yaesu.

Waguri-ya

Review: Waguri-ya, Tōkyō

Waguri-ya centres its menu on Japanese chestnut (waguri) preparations, with a narrow product range built around seasonal availability. The offering structure emphasises ingredient purity, with minimal layering to preserve the chestnut’s natural sweetness and texture.

Streetscape

Toshima — Ikebukuro

Ikebukuro presents a more vertical, high-density commercial environment, anchored by major department stores, electronics retailers, and entertainment complexes. The area functions as a transport hub and retail destination, with a constant flow of commuters and shoppers throughout the day.

Miyagi Furusato Plaza

Miyagi Furusato Plaza operated as a regional antenna shop representing Miyagi Prefecture, retailing local products and prepared foods tied to regional identity. The store closed on 15 December 2024, removing a point of access for Tōhoku-specialised goods within Ikebukuro.

Streetscape

Chūō — Ginza

Ginza maintains a polished, high-end retail environment, defined by wide streets, flagship stores, and controlled architectural presentation. Even outside peak hours, the area retains a measured, deliberate pace, with an emphasis on presentation and spatial order.
