Shinpachi Shokudo, Tōkyō

There are numerous branches of Shinpachi Shokudō throughout Japan, including several in Shinjuku alone. The restaurant was first encountered in Ōsaka by chance on a previous trip, and it has since become a firm favourite for the comforting, nourishing flavours of teishoku centred on expertly grilled fish

Char-grilled Atka Mackerel Set Meal (one fish, ¥1,265)

This set featured a whole hokke (Atka mackerel), known for its high fat content and Omega-3 profile. The fish was generously portioned, with a rich, naturally oily flesh that remained moist.

Char-grilled Cold Wind Dried Mackerel Combo Meal (¥1,045)

This variation used a dried mackerel (himono) that had a firmer texture and deeper intensity of flavour. The drying process had concentrated the umami, while the grilling imparted a subtle smokiness that enhanced its savoury appeal.

The dishes were served with aged brown rice, offering a pleasing chew and nutty flavour—an ideal substitute for white rice, especially when aiming for a lower glycaemic index. The aged brown rice held its texture without being overly firm, offering satisfying resistance to the bite. The standard miso soup was light and soothing, balancing the richness of the fish.

Side dishes and add-ons —

  • Seaweed salad with wasabi (+¥99): Fragrant wasabi added aromatic lift and gentle heat, pairing well with the cool, crisp texture of the seaweed.
  • Kinpira (+¥55): Julienned daikon and carrot were cooked just enough to retain crunch, delivering a savoury-sweet depth that contrasted with the softer textures of the fish.
  • Cucumber pickles were crisp, with a lively sweet-tart flavour that refreshed the palate.
  • Grated daikon served as a cooling counterpoint, cleansing the palate between bites of grilled fish.

Shinpachi Shokudō isn excellent example of teishoku dining, offering deeply satisfying grilled fish with well-considered accompaniments. Affordable, reliable, and nourishing—Shinpachi Shokudō remains a go-to option for homestyle Japanese meals.
