This is the Nippon Yell Gummy Okinawa Shiikwāsā, made with juice from shiikwāsā citrus grown in Okinawa Prefecture.
Native to the northern region of Okinawa (Yanbaru), shiikwāsā has long held cultural and culinary significance. It remains widely cultivated, traditionally valued for its versatility—used as a souring agent for sashimi and grilled fish, eaten fresh when fully ripe, or processed into juice and jelly. Historically, its acidic juice was also employed in the preparation of bashōfu cloth, aiding in stain removal and fibre softening.
Each gummy was a slightly domed, opaque yellow disc measuring approximately 2 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height, with a sharp and aromatic citrus scent immediately identifiable as shiikwāsā. The outer sugar coating gave way to a firm, elastic chew, enclosing a softer, jelly-like core.
On tasting, a brief initial sweetness quickly transitioned into the vivid sourness of shiikwāsā, which unfolded rapidly and intensively with each chew. The fruit’s signature tartness—brisk, mouth-watering, and aromatic—spread broadly across the palate. The clean acidity of the gummy’s exterior intensified this effect, evoking the experience of freshly squeezed shīkuwāsā juice, but in a textural format. Notably absent was any bitterness or oil-derived astringency, allowing the citrus character to remain focused, pure, and refreshing.
A distinctly regional expression, this gummy offered a bright, layered sourness that avoided harshness while retaining depth and clarity of flavour. It was both invigorating and aromatic, and well worth repurchasing.
