This is the Nippon Yell Gummy Fukui Fukudayū Ume, featuring purée made from fully ripe Fukudayū plums grown in Fukui Prefecture. These small, yellow, round plums are handpicked from the tree at peak ripeness and are prized for their fruity, refreshing aroma.
Each gummy was a slightly domed, opaque yellow disc measuring approximately 2 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height, with a fresh, fruity scent. A fine sugar coating provided a delicate initial crunch, followed by a firm, elastic chew that enclosed a softer, jelly-like centre.
On tasting, a brief surface-level sweetness quickly gave way to the concentrated fruit flavour of the jelly core. While reminiscent of Nankō ume, the profile here was rounder and far less tart, offering a pronounced sweetness with apricot-like aromatic qualities. However, the outer gummy was not without acidity—subtle tartness emerged by mid-chew, releasing a juicy, mouth-watering quality that balanced the sweeter core. The layered format—firm gummy surrounding a soft, rich centre—allowed for a gradual, evolving palate experience, effectively showcasing the character of the ripe Fukudayū plum.
Overall, a well-crafted sweet-sour plum gummy offering a distinctly different expression from Wakayama’s Nankō ume, with more emphasis on aromatic sweetness. Refreshing and worth repurchasing.
