This is the Morinaga Gumi ChocoBall Grape, containing 1% grape juice.
Each piece was spherical, measuring 2 cm in diameter, with a 3 mm milk chocolate shell encasing a translucent off-white grape gummy centre. The aroma combined sweet milk chocolate with a fragrant, fruity grape note.
On tasting, the chocolate coating gave a firm, light crunch before yielding to the chewy, bouncy gummy interior. The grape flavour emerged immediately with a fragrant musky quality, followed by the chocolate melting on the palate to deliver a creamy richness that paired unexpectedly well with the juicy sweetness of the gummy. The chocolate lingered into the finish, intermingling with smaller fragments of gummy for a layered texture. The two flavours remained distinct yet harmonious, and importantly did not evoke any wine-like or alcoholic associations—making for a surprisingly successful pairing in both flavour and texture.
Overall, a playful, well-executed combination of chocolate and grape gummy that was more enjoyable than expected, and one worth revisiting.
