Canton Claypot Rice, Eastwood

This is Canton Claypot Rice, a restaurant in Eastwood specialising in traditional claypot rice.

Pork Ribs with Black Bean Sauce Claypot Rice ($17.80, more crispy rice)

Prepared with extra crispy rice, this proved to be one of the strongest renditions of claypot rice encountered in Australia. The pork ribs were flavourful and well-cooked with very little excess fat, though the portion leaned modest. The blanched lettuce added freshness and a clean crunch. The only shortcoming was the black bean sauce, which could have delivered a bolder, more assertive profile to balance the dish.

Braised Lamb with Carrot Claypot Rice ($17.80, more crispy rice)

The lamb was exceptionally tender, sliding from the bone with no resistance. Its deeply savoury and gently spiced character paired beautifully with the rice. The crisp layer at the base was excellent—aromatic, evenly golden, and releasing cleanly from the pot.

Canton Sausage & Cured Meat Claypot Rice ($16.90, more crispy rice)

A generous serving of all cured meats was provided: duck liver sausage, which was drier and crumblier than regular lap cheong with a faint metallic note when eaten alone but ideal for textural contrast; regular lap cheong, juicy and balanced without excessive fat; and pork belly, reminiscent of quality ham with a soft smokiness on the finish. None of the meats were overly salty, and the sweet soy on the table added welcome depth. The cured meats paired well with both rice and lettuce. Allowing the pot to sit briefly after arrival yielded an excellent crisp base. A highly satisfying bowl.

Beef & Egg Claypot Rice ($17.90, more crispy rice)

The beef was tender and retained its juiciness, though it relied on the sweet soy sauce to bring the flavour forward. The residual heat from the pot cooked the raw egg to a point between oozy and set, giving the rice a cohesive, silky consistency.

Overall, this was an impressive set of claypot dishes, with the extra-crispy option fulfilling its promise after many lesser attempts elsewhere. Ingredient quality was evident across the board, though slightly larger portions would elevate the experience further.

Canton Claypot Rice is located at Shop 1/1 Glen St, Eastwood NSW 2122.
