Charred Affair, Hornsby

This is Charred Affair, a burger operation specialising in meat grilled over a woodfire.

The business runs from a food truck set up in the front yard of a residential property in Hornsby, creating a surprisingly calm and unforced setting, free from the manufactured atmosphere and loud music that often accompany burger venues. We tried two beef burgers.

Classic Beef Burger ($19.50) – 180 g wagyu beef patty, beef rasher, lettuce, onion, tomato, American cheese, mayonnaise, mustard and BBQ sauce, served with French fries.

Gourmet Beef Burger ($19.50) – 180 g wagyu beef patty, beef rasher, lettuce, onion, pickles, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, mustard and burger sauce, served with French fries.

Visually, both burgers arrived exactly as one hopes but rarely receives: generous, well-constructed, and proportional. The 180 g patties were thick, cooked to medium with a notable smokiness, and extended beyond the edges of the bun. The buns were soft yet structurally sound, holding their shape while remaining easy to bite through. The beef rasher, used in place of pork bacon given the halal offering, delivered a smoky savouriness without chewiness. The onions were well caramelised, retaining a gentle crunch without sharpness.

The difference between the two burgers came down to balance rather than structure. The Classic leaned slightly sweeter, driven by tomato, American cheese and BBQ sauce, while the Gourmet offered more tang and depth through pickles, cheddar and burger sauce. In practice, both were equally satisfying, with fresh vegetables providing contrast and the cheese acting as a cohesive umami anchor.

The French fries were well executed, with a crisp exterior and fluffy interior. A complimentary truffle mayonnaise was offered on recommendation, proving to be an excellent pairing, adding further savoury depth without overwhelming the fries.

Portions across both burgers and sides were generous, reflecting a clear emphasis on value without sacrificing quality. Overall, Charred Affair delivers carefully cooked, generously portioned burgers with strong fundamentals, thoughtful balance, and a calm dining experience that lets the food stand on its own. While somewhat out of the way for us, it is clearly a burger joint worth returning to when in the area.
