Matilda Bay Dirty Granny Apple Cider

When you have the name ‘granny’ in a cider with a green apple on its label, you’d assume that Granny Smith apples were involved in the making of the cider. Not this Matilda Bay Dirty Granny Apple Cider, though. The label states ‘Granny Smith apples may or may not have been used in the making of this cider’. Which is it?

The cider is a transparent golden straw colour with a sweet apple nose, moderate carbonation and – surprisingly – a foamy head. Served chilled, fresh notes of apple came through briefly before prominent acidity like a Granny Smith apple developed in the body and build towards the finish with a dry mouthfeel and a moderate astringency lingering in the aftertaste.

Overall, this cider is packed with the flavour of tart apples and is suited to those who prefer their ciders without sweetness – essentially the opposite end of the spectrum to the sweet ciders by Somersby or Kopparberg.

This Matilda Bay Dirty Granny Apple Cider contained 330 ml. It was produced in Australia and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2017.
