This is the Fever-Tree Soda Italian Blood Orange. It was a blend of blood oranges from Sicily, Italy, with herbs including wormwood and balsam. It’s intended as a mixer for vodka and Italian liqueurs, but we tried it on its own as a drink.
The beverage is an opaque red-orange colour with the sweet citrus aroma of blood oranges and moderate carbonation. Consumed chilled, the blood orange came through lightly zesty with a herbal quality at the head of each sip and developed with a subtle acidity in the body where the presence of the quinine emerged with a notable bitterness ahead of a dry finish and a clean aftertaste. Overall, the drink lacked the bright acidity of blood orange, capturing only its sweetness and none of its tartness that make its flavour comparable to a combination of raspberry and orange. While this soda had the advantage of being only 10 calories per 100 mL, we preferred the bolder, richer flavour of the Sanpellegrino Aranciatta Rossa.
