This is the Suntory Sesame Barley Tea, a blend of roasted barley and roasted white sesame.
The beverage had a clear golden-brown colour and a nutty, slightly sweet sesame aroma. When chilled, the mellow roasted nuttiness of the barley came through at the start of each sip, followed by the richer sesame flavour mid-sip. The two flavours complemented each other, gradually intensifying into a deep roasted profile, with the sesame’s richness almost overshadowing the more subtle barley. Its robust aroma and flavour made it a refreshing, strong caffeine-free and calorie-free option, similar to a morning black coffee. However, we found ourselves preferring the more balanced sweetness offered by the other ingredients in Japan’s 16-grain teas.
