Compared to Lim’s Hot Bread, which has been around in Eastwood for as long as one can remember, Destination Roll is a newcomer. But to our surprise, Destination Roll does not sell the basic pork roll.
So we ordered a BBQ Pork Roll, thinking it was much like the char siu that often forms on the cold cuts of a regular pork roll. To our surprise — and disappointment — it was actually a flattened slab of nem nướng, a Vietnamese grilled pork sausage. We should’ve gone with the Crispy Pork Roll even if we weren’t keen on the crackling in our sandwich.
Nevertheless, the nem nướng pork roll was a new and unexpected experience for us. We’re used to eating perhaps a single portion grilled on a stick, but this was a large slab (easily 2-3 portions) and its dense, fatty and heavily seasoned flavour made it a challenge to finish. It also lacked the moreish grilled flavour of its usual format and neither were carrots pickled sufficiently to cut through the richness of such a large portion.
When we’re in the mood for a pork roll next time in Eastwood, we’d probably return to Lim’s Hot Bread.
