Little Bun Kitchen, Sydney

Little Bun Kitchen is a virtual restaurant specialising in various Malaysian dishes, with orders placed through WeChat. We had the opportunity to sample their food through friends who order regularly. Initially, we tried their offerings at a baby’s full moon celebration, before having the chance to taste additional items.

Baked BBQ Buns. These buns featured a sweet shortcrust pastry glazed with egg yolk and filled with char siu pork and bits of lard, mixed with peas. The filling was enjoyable, and the peas did not dominate the flavour, which was a relief. However, the seasoning could have been stronger, and the pastry base was slightly underbaked.

Muah Chee. These consisted of glutinous rice dough wrapped around a filling of crushed peanuts and sugar. It was easily a favourite, with the dough’s perfect thinness and stretchiness providing just enough structure for the generously packed filling. The soft, chewy exterior paired excellently with the crunchy peanut filling, creating a satisfying balance of sweet and savoury flavours.

Although we wouldn’t order these buns ourselves due to the language barrier, we were pleased to try them and have since found similar items available at other stores in Sydney.
