With my penchant for desserts and baked goods, Saga was always just a little bit too far away in Enmore. So with their new miniature sister store opening in the upmarket food hall in The Exchange building at Darling Square in August, I was excited for the chance to finally see and taste their desserts.

My first foray into the desserts is the Apple Turnover ($8.50) with flaky puff pastry, apple brown butter jam, Anzac biscuit crumb, caramelised apple, vanilla Chantilly and golden syrup.

The two pieces of puff pastry sandwiching the innards is fun format for the flaky, buttery puff pastry with the caramelised golden syrup elevating the turnover with a moreish dark caramel flavour. The caramelised apple is a moderately spiced cinnamon and nutmeg flavour and retains a firm bite that pairs well with the lightness and softness of the vanilla Chantilly and the crunch of the Anzac biscuit crumb. Overall, this is a tasty apple turnover, but I’d be more keen to try the other desserts in the cabinet before returning.

On my second visit, I tried the Lemon Meringue Pie ($8.50) with pie crust, popcorn caramel, lemon curd and lemon meringue.

N and I are almost always on the lookout for a good lemon tart and this was our first in a while. We enjoy the lemon curd here immensely and there simply wasn’t nearly enough of it! The popcorn caramel took up far too much pie real estate and its overwhelming sweetness was an unnecessary counter to the tart lemon curd — we eat the lemon tart for its tart and tangy flavour. The meringue was piled high, but also didn’t have the silky smooth marshmallow softness that made the one from Blackedmith Cafe & Bakery so perfect.
Perhaps it’s time we tried their famous mini cakes or pies instead.
