A conversation comparing some recent burgers we’d enjoyed led D and me to conclude that Burger Fuel makes our favourite burgers and also led us back to Grill’d. This time we’re headed for the store at Macquarie Centre.
The new steak burgers entice me and I try the High Steaks ($16.90) made with 100% grass fed scotch fillet, crispy bacon, aged cheddar, free range egg, smoked sea salt, cos lettuce, tomato, relish and herbed mayo.
This is one monster of a burger that I had trouble getting my mouth around to taste all the ingredients in a single bite. D has a much larger mouth and just managed! But for the few bites where I did get all the innards at once, they were delicious. The steak is cooked to medium rare, juicy and tender, while the bacon is smoky with crispy edges. The fried egg could’ve been a bit more sunny-side up, but added a softness to the burger, while the cheese brought richness and the salad and mayo added freshness. All in all, a delicious burger!
D tries another newish burger on their menu, Black with the Lot ($13.90) with black crumb chicken schnitzel, crispy bacon, tasty cheese, sour cream, baby cos, tomato and sweet chilli mayo.
The black crumb is visually dramatic but doesn’t bring much flavour to the schnitzel other than a general blandness, as you’d expect from activated charcoal foods. That said, the schnitzel was juicy and the smoky bacon and cheese added the richness of flavour lost from the black crumb. Overall, it’s a tasty burger but nothing but won’t have us returning.
Macquarie Centre is slowly coming into its own in terms of dining options, but the quality of the food and service tends to lack the finesse of more established branches of chain restaurants located elsewhere.
