Hương Xưa is a group of restaurants specialising in northern Vietnamese cuisine, with locations in major Vietnamese enclaves around Sydney. We previously visited their Canley Vale branch, and they also have a location in Bankstown.

Phở Bò Dặc Biệt ($18.00).
This was a Northern Vietnamese-style phở, characterised by a lighter broth with a more pronounced beef flavour, lacking the aromatic herbs and spices typical of the southern version. While we generally prefer the southern style, this version was better than the one from Phở Tàu Bay, as it had a richer beef flavour and more savoury depth. However, the beef was disappointing, consisting mostly of brisket with just a few pieces of tripe and beef balls, and no rare beef as described on the menu. Overall, this was an unimpressive bowl of phở, and not one we would return for.

Bún Nem ($16.50).
The spring rolls were fried fresh to order and arrived piping hot. However, they were not particularly crisp, and the wrapper had a slightly oily taste. The filling was dominated by an overwhelming onion flavour, which we didn’t particularly enjoy, and it lacked the crunch that water chestnuts would have provided. While the portion size was generous and the price was affordable, we wouldn’t return for these spring rolls, as the ones from VN Street Food and Phú Quốc are far superior.

Overall, while the prices at Hương Xưa are reasonable, the food was mediocre and the service was virtually non-existent. Despite making eye contact, the waitstaff made no effort to seat customers, leaving a lot to be desired in both food and service.
Hương Xưa is located at 54 John St, Cabramatta NSW 2166.
