Nikumeshi Okamoto, Tōkyō

Nikumeshi Okamoto is another establishment located just outside Shimbashi Station in Tōkyō, catering primarily to the area’s substantial salaryman population.

Initially drawn in by the autumn seasonal limited nikujaga teishoku, the visit revealed a comforting menu of braised pork-centric dishes at highly accessible prices.

Nikujaga Teishoku (¥1,089)

This dish offered a distinctly home-style flavour, with a generous variety of well-cooked ingredients including potato, sweet potato, greens, shirataki, carrot, and daikon. The texture and variety were commendable; however, the pork, despite being advertised as horohoro (melt-in-the-mouth), was served in large chunks that remained somewhat dry, having not absorbed the braising liquid to the centre. Nonetheless, the overall dish was satisfying, particularly when the soy-based braising sauce was mixed with rice. The accompanying pork soup was clear and refreshing, accented with chopped scallions and a few pieces of pork, providing both lightness and depth. A rounded and nourishing meal.

Chāshū Egg Teishoku (¥1,309)

The pork here was sliced thinner and included more fat, which allowed it to better absorb the broth and achieve the promised melt-in-the-mouth quality. The sauce provided ample flavour when combined with the rice. A perfectly cooked sunny side up egg with a runny yolk added richness, while shredded cabbage contributed a welcome crunch and freshness. The soup mirrored that of the previous set: light, clear, and deeply satisfying.

Nikumeshi Okamoto delivers well-balanced, comforting meals that showcase pork in a variety of braised preparations. With generous portions, thoughtful seasoning, and balanced textures, it is excellent value for money. A solid choice for a casual, nourishing meal in central Tōkyō.
