Lukumades, Chippendale

Lukumades opened its first store in Sydney in DUO Central Park in mid-2019. It’s dedicated to Greek doughnuts of the same name, loukoumades, and consist of leavened and deep fried dough, soaked in syrup or honey, sometimes coated with cinnamon or other ingredients. Lukumades also offers a modern spin in addition to the traditional flavours (think ice cream, salted caramel and crushed biscuits). Unfortuantely, the store does not offer Greek coffee.

This Honey and Cinnamon ($12.00 for 12) flavour was one of the most traditional flavours on the menu. The doughnuts are fried fresh to order so there’s about a 10-minute wait, and the result is a pastry that’s deliciously golden and crispy on the outside but pillowy soft and chewy on the inside.

In essentials, the chewiness gave it the mouthfeel that recalled a crispier pon-de-ring from Mister Donut in Japan. The honey came through prominently on tasting, but the cinnamon is surprisingly subdued despite the generous dusting.

This is the Cinnamon Sugar, but it pales in comparison to the previous flavour as the slightly sour note in the leavened dough becomes more prominent without the honey to mask it. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed these doughnuts, which doesn’t happen too often when it comes to my experiences with the latest food trends.
