Masterpost: Pear Varieties

This masterpost serves as a guide to the distinctive characteristics of various pear varieties.

To achieve a 5.0 rating for taste, a pear must meet the following criteria:

  1. Display a bright, vibrant pear flavour with balanced sweetness.
  2. Offer additional flavour complexity, such as floral, honeyed, or tropical notes.
  3. Exhibit minimal to no bitterness or sourness, even near the core.
  4. Avoid excessive wateriness, ensuring a concentrated and rich flavour.
  5. Maintain a fresh, clean aftertaste.

To earn a 5.0 rating for texture, a pear must meet these standards:

  1. Feature crisp, crunchy flesh that is refreshing to bite into.
  2. Have a juicy interior without being mushy or overly soft.
  3. Avoid a grainy or mealy texture, especially in the flesh.
  4. Present a skin that is smooth or thin, avoiding fibrous or tough textures.
  5. Maintain firmness without feeling dry or chalky, even when fully ripe.

Asian Pears

Asian pears are classified into two primary groups:

  • Akanashi (Russet pears): Yellow-brown rinds.
  • Aonashi (Green pears): Yellow-green rinds.

Akanashi (Russet Pears)

Brown Nashi

Appearance: Large, about 10 cm in diameter, with an apple-like round shape. The skin is yellow-brown and lightly rough in texture.

  • Taste: 4.0 – Juicy and sweet, but slightly watery, which detracts from the richness.
  • Texture: 3.0 – Soft crunch with noticeable fibrous skin. While the skin is not unpleasant, it could benefit from peeling to avoid its fibrousness.

Shingo Pear

Appearance: Shingo pears are grown primarily in Japan and are one of the largest nashi pear varieties.

  • Taste: 5.0 — The flavour is sweet and vibrant, with a honeydew melon-like taste. It is rich in flavour, without the typical wateriness found in other nashi pears.
  • Texture: 4.5 — The flesh is crisp and crunchy, offering even more crunch than a typical nashi pear. The skin is thick and fibrous, requiring peeling for the best experience.

Aonashi

White Nashi

Appearance: Large, round, about 10 cm in diameter, with smooth yellow-green skin.

  • Taste: 3.5 – A delicate Asian pear aroma with mellow , floral weetness, though slightly watery compared to the richer flavours of an Indiana Pearl or Papple. The sweetness avoids any sourness near the core.
  • Texture: 4.0 – The flesh is firm, offering a satisfying crunch with a minimal grainy texture. The skin is somewhat thick and fibrous but does not impart any bitterness or sourness, though peeling is recommended.

Indiana Pearl

Appearance: A large, round, apple-shaped Asian pear grown in Australia and exported globally. The skin is smooth with a uniform yellow hue.

  • Taste: 4.5 – A subtle aroma of Asian pear, with juicy sweetness. This pear improves upon the usual nashi texture, avoiding the typical grainy or watery characteristics while maintaining its core sweetness.
  • Texture: 5.0 – The skin is thinner than most nashi pears, with a smooth, non-fibrous texture that does not require peeling. The flesh is white, firm, and crunchier than the Papple, offering a smoother overall texture.

European Pears

Barlett (Williams)

Appearance: A bell-shaped pear with green skin, ripening to yellow (or red in some cases). It is widely grown and one of the most popular varieties globally.

  • Taste: Rated 4.0 – A distinct pear flavour, both in the skin and flesh, offering a pleasant balance of sweetness and mild acidity.
  • Texture: Rated 4.5 – The flesh is firm and crunchy when eaten fresh, with the skin offering medium thickness that does not detract from the overall texture.

Buerre Bosc

Appearance: Medium to large in size, oblong shape with a rounded base and tapered neck. The skin is golden-tan with rough brown russeting. Originally from France or Belgium, it is now grown in many parts of Europe, Australia, and North America.

  • Taste: Rated 5.0 – An intense, honeyed aroma that translates into a sweet, slightly woodsy flavour, reminiscent of autumn. The sweetness intensifies as the pear ripens.
  • Texture: Rated 4.0 – The flesh is firm and dense when just ripe, becoming smooth and buttery as it fully ripens. The skin is thick and somewhat rough on the palate.

Corella

Appearance: Small to medium in size, with an irregular shape. The pear has a green-yellow skin with red blushing and smooth texture.

  • Taste: Rated 4.0 – Mild and sweet, with buttery notes similar to Buerre Bosc, but with a hint of the fresh, green flavour found in Bartlett pears. While balanced, the flavour can be somewhat too mild.
  • Texture: Rated 4.5 – Crisp and juicy when eaten early in the ripening process. The flesh is smooth, and the skin is thin.

Josephine

Appearance: Smaller in size, with a tapered shape. The skin is light green, and the flesh is bright white.

  • Taste: 4.0 – The pear has a crisper and smoother taste compared to Bartlett, with a juicy sweetness and minimal acidity.
  • Texture: 5.0 – Thin-skinned and offering a noticeably crisp crunch. When fully ripe, the flesh becomes almost melt-in-the-mouth tender.

Packham

Appearance: Medium to large with a large base tapering to a small neck. The skin is green with yellow hues, and the flesh is ivory.

  • Taste: Rated 3.0 – Juicy and sweet when ripe, but the flavour can be somewhat bland compared to other pears.
  • Texture: Rated 3.5 – Crunchy when unripe, but softens to a creamy texture as it ripens.

Red Angel

Appearance: A large, bell-shaped pear with deep red skin transitioning to vibrant red when ripe. The flesh is off-white.

  • Taste: Rated 4.0 – Sweet with a low-acid flavour and a subtle aroma.
  • Texture: Rated 4.5 – Firm, dense flesh with a mild buttery quality. The skin is thin and does not affect the texture negatively.

Other Pears

Papple

Appearance: A medium-sized hybrid developed in New Zealand, round to conical in shape, with a mottled orange-red hue on a yellow background.

  • Taste: 5.0 – Delightfully sweet, with the distinct flavour of an Asian pear. Unlike traditional nashi pears, the Papple has a very small core and smoother flesh.
  • Texture: 4.5 – The flesh is crisp and juicy, with the skin offering little resistance, similar to an apple in both appearance and texture.

Piqa Boo

Appearance: A small, round pear with a vibrant red blush over its yellow-green skin.

  • Taste: Rated 3.0 – Lacks the bright, rich sweetness of the Papple, offering a more mellow flavour.
  • Texture: Rated 4.5 – Thin skin and less noticeable, with a firm, buttery, juicy flesh.

Rico

  • Taste: Rated 5.0 – Fresh, tropical, and very juicy, with a flavourful sweetness.
  • Texture: Rated 4.5 – Crisp and juicy, with a satisfying crunch. This pear is highly recommended and worth repurchasing.
