Sealord Beer Batter Hoki Fillets

When it comes to deep-fried fish, our favourite coating is always a beer batter. With the exception of the Blue Mountains Hotel in Lawson, we’ve not come anything that comes close within Sydney for a similar price. Looking for a snack at home, these Sealord Beer Batter Hoki Fillets caught our eye in the freezer section.

Each box contained 6 hoki fillets (65%) caught fresh from New Zealand waters and covered in a beer batter coating (35%) made from New Zealand beer. The fillets were about 10 x 5 x 2.5 cm. The fillets are ready after baking for 9 minutes on each side in a conventional oven preheated at 200°C.

The smell of beer fills as the air as these fillets are baking and lingered on each shortly after taking them out of the oven. The beer flavour, though, is limited to the smell and not picked up on tasting. Nevertheless, the smell of beer got our hopes up about a crisp coating only for us to be disappointed. Despite baking for longer than recommended the coating remain soft and chewy. The fish, though, was delicious with a moist and flaky texture.

This Sealord Beer Batter Hoki Fillets contained 390 g. It was produced in New Zealand and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2018.
