Choi Heong Yuen Bakery Almond Cakes

Founded in 1935, Choi Heong Yuen Bakery is one of three major bakeries in Macau known locally for almond cookies (the other two being Koi Kei and Yeng Kee). This is the Choi Heong Yuen Bakery Almond Cakes.

Each box contained 18 individually sealed almond cookie. These cookies were crafted from a compressed cake formed using a wooden mould.

Each cookie measured 5.5 cm in diameter and 1.3 cm in height, emitting a sweet, nutty aroma. Upon the first bite, the almond cookie presented a dense and powdery texture that initially felt dry on the palate. However, it rapidly transformed into a melt-in-the-mouth sensation as the sugar dissolved, unveiling an incredibly aromatic and nutty almond flavour. Midway through the bite, the generously scattered crushed almonds became evident, providing a delightful crunch and a subtle, yet harmonizing, savoury element that complemented the cookies’ sweet and powdery quality with finesse. The overall flavour resembled compressed kinako but featured more pronounced floral almond notes. In summary, these cookies, with their initial crunch, melt-in-the-mouth texture, and well-balanced sweetness and savoury notes, made for the perfect pairing with a cup of tea.

This Choi Heong Yuen Bakery Almond Cakes contained 450 g (18 pieces). It was produced in Macau and received as a gift from family visiting Macau in 2023.
