Black forest cake was never my pick of cakes during my childhood. I’d developed such an aversion to all things cherry flavoured as a result of taking cherry flavoured cough syrup as a child that I did not enjoy cherries – other than fresh by itself – as a flavour or an ingredient to cake or candy until well into my 20s when I became particularly fond of Cherry Ripe chocolate bars for a while. That’s just as well for this Cadbury Dairy Milk Black Forest.
Cadbury Dairy Milk Black Forest is a combination of cherry flavoured jellies and biscuit pieces blended in with milk chocolate.
This is a very enjoyable block of chocolate, with the chocolate biscuit pieces adding an audible crunch to the chocolate as it melts to a smooth consistency and the cherry jellies bringing a chewiness and a pop of non-boozy fruity flavour – fruit flavoured chocolate sometimes has a lightly fermented boozy character – that’s sweet and bright and contrasts strongly with the richer chocolate flavours. The jellies linger on the palate after the chocolate has melted away, allowing you to enjoy chewing on them and do not stick to your teeth. The jellies are better distributed than in the photo, with a piece is almost every square.
Overall, it tastes similar to the Dairy Milk Marvellous Creations Jelly Crunchie Bits Block also by Cadbury but in a more uniform square format.
