Calbee Jagariko Kansai Niku Jaga

Nikujaga (literally, meat potato) is a dish of meat, potatoes, onion and carrots stewed in sweetened soy sauce. Ostensibly a Japanese beef stew in western Japan, nikujaga is the inspiration for the Kansai region limited flavour: Calbee Jagariko Kansai Nikujaga.

As with other tubs of Jagariko, there are around 30 sticks in each one. Each stick is around 7 cm longer with a golden yellow colour flecked with specks of brown, orange and green.

This Jagariko smells and tastes exactly like beef and vegetables stewed in soy sauce. There’s a pleasant savoury aroma from that came through on the first bite and reminds of slow cooked beef before the starchier flavours of potato came through in the second half of each bite and finish with the sweetness of stewed onions and carrots. It’s a tasty flavour reminiscent of comforting home cooking and one of the few Jagariko flavours where the taste of potato is prominent.

This tub of Calbee Jagariko Kansai Niku Jaga contained 52 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Ōsaka, Japan in 2018.
