This is the Calbee Kataage Potato Yakinori, featuring potato chips seasoned with roasted seaweed.

The chips were approximately 1 mm thick but relatively small, ranging from 3 to 4 cm in diameter. They had a golden yellow hue with green specks of seasoning. The aroma was umami-rich and oceanic, reminiscent of kombu, and immediately enticing.

With a snappy crunch akin to kettle-cooked chips, they opened with an immediate savoury note, followed by the bold umami depth of roasted yakinori. The intensity of the roasted seaweed peaked mid-bite before giving way to the rich and comforting potato flavour, which lingered alongside the seaweed’s umami in the finish. After a few chips, a very subtle heat developed on the palate.
Delicious and addictive, these chips delivered a delightful crunch with an unapologetically bold yakinori flavour, making them a snack that could easily become a favourite.
