Calbee Kataage Yuzu Salt Lemon

This is the Calbee Kataage Yuzu Salt Lemon, a flavour first introduced in 2023 as the result of a collaboration with fans of the Kataage Potato line.

The chips had a light yellow to golden hue, measuring approximately 1.5–2 mm in thickness, with a distinct aroma of floral yuzu and a hint of lemon acidity.

On tasting, the chips delivered a formidable and highly satisfying thick-cut, kettle-cooked crunch. An initial lemony acidity was noticeable upon contact with the palate, followed by the salt dissolving and the crunch continuing through the bite. The lemony notes developed alongside the floral complexity of yuzu, adding depth to the citrus flavour. Mid-bite, the savoury potato notes emerged, contributing to a well-rounded potato chip flavour, before giving way to a pronounced sweetness that had the unmistakable presence of artificial sweetener—later confirmed as aspartame in the ingredients list. A fresh floral citrus flavour lingered on the tongue in the aftertaste.

Overall, these chips were most enjoyable for their exceptional thick-cut crunch. While the yuzu salt lemon flavour was pleasant, the artificial sweetener detracted from the experience.

This Calbee Kataage Yuzu Salt Lemon contained 60 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2025.
