This is the Koikeya Karamucho Kareinaru Hee Ichizoku, part of the long-running Karamucho brand.
The original Karamucho spicy snack was first released in September 1984. At the time, spicy potato chips were a rarity, and their strong reception at a single store quickly spread through word of mouth, earning them the reputation of being “the spark that ignited the super spicy food boom.” Over the decades, the brand became widely recognised, thanks to memorable advertising campaigns such as Grandma Hee’s catchphrase “Hee!” and the creation of the “Hee Clan.” Now spanning the Shōwa, Heisei, and Reiwa eras, Karamucho remains a staple of the Japanese snack market.
Each chip in this curry-inspired edition featured a shallow ridge cut, measuring 4–6 cm in diameter, with a yellow-orange hue dusted with flecks of green, red, and white seasoning. The aroma was mellow, carrying a spiced curry fragrance.
On tasting, the chips delivered a light crunch, followed by a gentle savoury spice that developed into a mild sweetness through the body. The flavour evoked a softened version of Indian curry, rounded and savoury with subtle heat emerging towards the finish. Unlike sharper spice profiles, the seasoning here was balanced and approachable, leaning towards depth rather than intensity—likely designed to appeal across generations.
