Koikeya Pure Potato Goukai Nori Shio

This is the Koikeya Pure Potato Gōkai Nori Shio, with packaging commemorating Berabō Tsutajū Eiga no Yume-banashi, a Japanese historical drama television series airing in 2025.

The chips varied in size from approximately 4–7 cm in diameter and 1–1.5 mm in thickness. They presented in a golden-yellow hue with occasional brown edging from the potato skin, and were coated generously with vivid green flecks of nori. Upon opening, a pronounced marine aroma rose from the packet, immediately signalling the seaweed-forward profile.

On tasting, the surface delivered an immediate umami impact from the nori, followed by a firm, satisfying bite. The texture was dense and compact, closer to a crispbread-like snap than the loud, airy crunch typical of kettle-cooked chips. The exterior held a lightly roughened, almost dry texture that gave way to a more compact interior, reinforcing the sense of substance.

The potato flavour emerged gradually beneath the seaweed, beginning with clean, lightly salted opening notes. Through the mid-palate, it developed a rounded, earthy body, while the nori continued to frame the experience with savoury depth. A faint, mellow warmth lingered in the aftertaste, likely from the seasoning blend rather than overt spice, leaving a restrained but persistent finish.

Overall, this was a well-structured nori shio chip that balanced marine umami with solid potato presence, favouring density and savoury depth over lightness or novelty.

This Koikeya Pure Potato Goukai Nori Shio contained 50 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2026.
