This is the Morinaga Hi-Chew Amaou Ichigō, featuring juice from Amaō strawberries cultivated in Fukuoka Prefecture, known for their balance of sweetness and acidity.
Each piece measured approximately 2.5 × 1.5 × 1 cm, with an opaque pastel pink exterior surrounding a white core. A vivid strawberry aroma was immediately noticeable on opening the package, suggesting the intensity to come. On tasting, the characteristic Amaōu strawberry flavour was apparent from the outset—rich and full-bodied. The profile began with a pronounced sweetness, gradually giving way to a vibrant tartness mid-chew that delivered a deeply concentrated, natural strawberry flavour.
The flavour concentration exceeded that of the standard Hi-Chew range and was more aligned with the Kyūshū regional edition. Importantly, as with most Japan-produced Hi-Chew variants, there was no artificial aftertaste. The texture followed the familiar Hi-Chew format: soft and resilient, without excessive stickiness, and leaving a clean finish on the palate.
Overall, this was a standout Hi-Chew offering, delivering an authentic and well-balanced Amaou strawberry flavour with excellent textural integrity—worth seeking out.
