This UHA Mikakutō Miwaku Sweet Corn marked our first encounter with a candy that boasted the flavour of sweet corn. Despite the unexpected choice, my affinity for corn potage made it an enticing proposition for our taste buds.
It used sweet corn grains and powder from Hokkaidō to ‘bring out the pure taste of sweet corn’.
Individually sealed, each piece measured about 1.5 x 1.5 x 1 cm, cloaked in a yellow exterior embracing a white interior punctuated by vibrant yellow specks, coupled with an inviting sweet corn fragrance. Upon tasting, the candy exhibited a resilient and chewy texture, reminiscent of Morinaga Hi-Chew. The immediate presence of sweet corn flavour gave way to an intensified interplay of sweetness and savoury umami as we chewed, akin to savouring a delectable corn potage. The paler centre, studded with corn grains, contributed a subtle textural dimension to the chew, akin to nibbling on real corn kernels.
In summary, this candy artfully encapsulated the dual nature of sweet corn—both sweet and savoury—with impressive authenticity and depth. While it might not become our candy staple, its delightful interplay of texture and taste left a positive impression. One can’t help but wonder if a tomato soup iteration might be on the horizon.
