This is the Nippon Yell Gummy Wakayama Nankō Ume, made with purée from Nankō plums grown in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan’s leading ume-producing region. Revered since antiquity as the “chief of all medicines,” plums hold a longstanding place in Japanese culinary and medicinal tradition.
Each gummy had an opaque yellow-green hue and measured approximately 2 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height. A refreshing ume aroma was immediately apparent on opening the packet. On tasting, the sugar crystals on the surface offered a brief moment of gentle sweetness and a delicate crunch, followed by a firm, bouncy outer layer that yielded easily to a soft, jelly-like core. The plum flavour emerged at once, with the jelly centre delivering a rich, fragrant sweetness. As chewing continued, the outer gummy layer introduced a measured acidity, allowing the sweet centre to gradually give way to a more pronounced tartness in the finish. The result evoked the apricot-like brightness of ume without straying into excessive sourness.
This was a well-executed flavour profile and a strong candidate for repurchasing.
