This is the Akagi Kajiru Amaou Strawberry Butter Ice Cream. The original Kajiru Butter Ice Cream was honoured with the Japan Food Journal’s Outstanding Hit Award at the 40th Food Hit Awards in 2021.

This variation incorporated amaou strawberries from Fukuoka into the original ice cream’s blend of fermented butter from Hokkaidō. It featured 5% amaou strawberry juice and 3% pulp from other strawberry varieties.

Upon tasting, the ice cream offered a distinct texture reminiscent of biting into softened butter. Exceptionally creamier and smoother than typical ice creams, it managed to sidestep the greasy mouthfeel often associated with butter. The pronounced flavour of cultured butter took the lead, carrying a subtle tang that was accentuated and balanced by the delicate acidity and mild sweetness of amaou strawberries. The inclusion of strawberry pulp contributed delightful bursts of fresh texture. On the whole, the ice cream conveyed the sensation of cold strawberry-infused butter. The combination of textured cultured butter and invigorating strawberry flavour created a uniquely inviting experience.
This Akagi Kajiru Amaou Strawberry Butter Ice Cream contained 75 mL. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2023.
