This is the Gong Cha Grape Green Tea with Basil Seed ($5.70, with no ice and 30% sweetness), one of the ‘creative’ teas at Gong Cha that already come with a topping.
The tea is a cloudy deep red colour with the aroma of red grapes. Served chilled, a fresh red grape juice flavour came through, though not quite as bright as the fruit juice in budō grape flavoured items from Japan, and developed with a slight acidity into the body along with a moderate astringency from the green tea. The grape flavour tastes surprisingly natural, rather than obviously from a sugar-based syrup as in the drinks at Chatime, while the basil seed adds a textural interest and a slight nuttiness when chewed through.
Grape Green Tea with Basil Seed appeared on Gong Cha in Sydney, Australia during August 2018.
