Fruity drinks are infinitely more exciting to me than dairy ones and this limited edition Machi Machi Grapefruit Green Tea Slush with Fruit Jelly ($8.50, less sugar) had me excited by being pretty as a picture with its layers. As with all their bottled drinks, we stir the jelly around after inserting the straw to break it up.
Here, the slush delivered a bright and ruby grapefruit flavour with a balanced sweetness and without the bitterness often accompanying grapefruit. The grapefruit pulp — whole juice vesicles — deliver pops of acidity that brighten the sweetness of the slush, and along with the unflavoured jelly itself, add sufficient textural interest without overwhelming. This is a firm favourite — it’s rare that I find a drink so delightful that I simply return for another to share with D in the evening.

April 2022 update: The original drink in this post is now $9.50. The Grapefruit Green Tea Slush (above) on its own without the bottle ($7.50, less sugar), but with the addition of kanten jelly (+$1.50) delivered a bouncier mouthfeel than the jelly. Both are deliciously good, just different.
This Grapefruit Green Tea Slush with Fruit Jelly was purchased at Machi Machi in November 2020.
