This is the Pokka Sapppro Gyokuro-Iri Ocha, a bottled green tea incorporating up to 6% gyokuro tea leaves sourced from Kumamoto Prefecture, as well as domestically produced sencha and matcha. Part of its proceeds supported the restoration of Kumamoto Castle, which sustained significant damage during the April 2016 earthquake.
The tea had a transparent golden-brown hue and a distinct, savoury aroma marked by umami and fragrant green tea notes. When consumed chilled, the flavour closely matched the aroma—clean, refined, and satisfying. The umami character was gentle and balanced, without veering into briny or marine territory. Grassy notes were present, but subdued, contributing to a refreshing, aromatic profile. The body was smooth, with no pronounced bitterness or astringency, though the slightest hint emerged towards the finish, adding a well-judged edge.
Comparable to Kirin Nama Cha in terms of quality, this offered greater aromatic complexity and clarity. Overall, a fragrant, clean and gently umami-rich green tea with no bitterness—well-balanced and worth repurchasing.
This Pokka Sapppro Gyokuro-Iri Ocha contained 600 mL. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2025.
