CookieTime is a New Zealand brand popular for its chocolate chunk cookies. They’re slightly more ‘world famous’ than L&P it’d seem as we’d encountered one of their physical stores in Harajuku, Tōkyō on a recent visit. This Cookie Time Gluten Free Chocolate Chunk Cookie is a gift from a colleague with coeliac disease.

Each cookie is 10 cm in diameter, made from maize starch, rice flour and potato starch and contained 20% chocolate chunks.

Not being allergic to gluten, this was my first encounter with a gluten free baked good. The cookie is a paler colour but has the same buttery aroma of gluten cookies, with a soft texture. Upon tasting, the cookie is soft and chewy with the chocolate chips melting throughout delivering pops of richness. The flavour, overall, is enjoyable and while the cookie does taste subtly different — less ‘heavy’ than wheat flour and more ‘light’ like a rice flour — I would not have attributed the change in flavour to being gluten free had I not already known. I am pleasantly surprised by the potential for gluten free food to be tasty and appetising.
This CookieTime Gluten Free Chocolate Chunk Cookie contained 1 piece or 60 g. It was produced in New Zealand and received as a gift from a colleague from New Zealand in 2019.
