A fan of the Taiwanese pineapple cakes and lychee in general, we picked up this Sugar Honey Lychee Cakes to see how they compare.

Each box contained 8 individually foil sealed cakes that are approximately 4 x 4 x 2 cm in size and consist of a lychee flavoured wax gourd base centre surrounded by short bread.

 

Each cake has a buttery and mellow lychee aroma. Upon tasting, the short bread is crumbly but not buttery and has a grainy and crunchy mouthfeel as if sugar crystals have not been dissolved. The wax gourd centre is firm with a moderately fragrant lychee flavour that came through from the small chunks of dried lychee that produce some bite but not enough to actually bring pops of bright lychee flavour. Overall, the lychee flavour was enjoyable but the grainy mouthfeel from the shortbread is offputting enough for us to not return for these.

This Sugar Honey Lychee Cakes contained 240 g or 8 pieces. It was produced in China and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2019.
