This is the Freeze Dry Lab Aomori no Pocket Ringo Sakura no Sato.

Each package contained seven individual bags, each featuring freeze-dried pieces from a different variety of apple produced in Aomori Prefecture.

The number of pieces per bag varied, with most measuring around three-centimetre wedges about one centimetre thick, including the skin.

Kōgyoku

Bright dark red skin with off-white flesh. Firm, dense, and highly crunchy texture with a sharp, formidable sourness and a vibrant, juicy apple flavour.

Jonagold

Pink-red skin with off-white flesh. Crisp and crunchy but lighter in texture than the denser Kōgyoku. Bright, juicy tartness with a hint of sweetness. More tart than sweet. Good balance and flavour—preferable to Tsugaru due to its livelier acidity.

Mutsu

Pink-red skin with light yellow flesh. Spongier texture, lacking the crispness of the others, hinting at the mealy quality of the fresh variety. Mildly sweet with slight tartness. Overall unremarkable.

Fuji

Dark pink-purple skin with light yellow flesh. Especially flavourful skin with a vibrant sweetness. More sweet than tart, yet still retains a distinct apple character. Less crunchy than Kōgyoku but richer in sweetness.

Tsugaru

Dark red to purple skin with white flesh. Excellent apple flavour—bright, lightly sour with a touch of honeyed sweetness. Freeze-drying improved its usual mealy texture, resulting in a crisp, clean bite.

Kinsei

Yellow speckled skin with white flesh. Intensely sweet, almost honey-like by the second half of the bite. Crunchy but lacking distinctive apple flavour, leaning more towards sweetness than freshness.

Ōrin

Medium yellow skin with brown freckles. Exceptionally crisp and crunchy, with a balanced apple flavour combining sweetness and juicy tartness. One of the best, alongside Kōgyoku and Fuji.

Overall, an engaging and enjoyable tasting experience showcasing the diverse textures and flavour profiles of Aomori’s apple varieties—each distinct in balance, sweetness, tartness, and crunch.
