This is the Takachiho Sakuran Board, made with juice and syrup from Sato Nishiki cherries, as well as wheat grown in Yamagata Prefecture. It was awarded two stars at the 2023 Superior Taste Award by the International Taste Institute in Brussels.

Each box contained six individually sealed pieces.

Each piece was rectangular, measuring 9 x 2 x 1 cm, and consisted of five layers: three layers of wafer sandwiching two layers of cherry-flavoured white chocolate.

The wafer had a dense, substantial feel, and biting through revealed a satisfyingly firm crunch, in contrast to the lighter, airier wafers commonly found on the market, such as those by Garden. The cherry-flavoured white chocolate emerged swiftly on tasting, delivering a fruity sweetness with a touch of tartness characteristic of red-blushed cherries. This fruitiness was well complemented by the sweet, lightly caramelised, Maillard-developed toasted notes of the wafer, which lingered on the palate.
Overall, the firm crunch of these wafers and their refined cherry flavour made them a worthwhile souvenir from Yamagata Prefecture.

This Takachiho Sakuran Board contained 6 pieces. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Yamagata, Japan in 2024.
