This is the Nippon Yell Dried Fruit Wakayama Kiyomi Orange, made with juice from Kiyomi oranges grown in Wakayama Prefecture. Kiyomi oranges, the first tangor (a hybrid of mandarin and sweet orange) developed in Japan, are highly regarded for their significance in citrus breeding. Since their introduction, they have been used as a parent variety for other Japanese citrus cultivars, including the Dekopon.
The Kiyomi orange was named after two scenic spots in the Okitsu neighbourhood of Shimizu-ku in Shizuoka Prefecture, near the Okitsu Branch Fruit Research Station, where the fruit was first developed. The two locations are Kiyomi-gata, a bay and beach in Shimizu-ku, and Seiken-ji Temple, also known as Kiyomi-dera, a Buddhist temple overlooking the city.

The dried Kiyomi orange pieces varied in size and were coated with fine sugar. The rind had a deep orange hue, while the flesh was a vibrant medium orange. They emitted a mellow, sweet citrus aroma.

The exterior was firm with the thin layer of crystallised sugar, offering a slight crunch when bitten into, but yielding effortlessly to a gentle bite. Upon tasting, the pieces delivered a sweet, fragrant flavour, with both the flesh and rind being notably low in fibre. The flesh was tender, almost melting in the mouth as it rehydrated with the sugar crystals, releasing a juicy sweetness complemented by vibrant acidity mid-bite. The rind had a firmer texture, and each chew revealed an aromatic, zesty orange flavour, balanced by a subtle hint of pleasant bitterness. This dried fruit was particularly enjoyable for capturing the concentrated essence of fresh Kiyomi oranges, offering an intensity similar to freeze-dried fruit but with a more satisfying texture.
This Nippon Yell Dried Fruit Wakayama Kiyomi Orange contained 22 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2024.
