This is the Calbee Kataage Potato Dadacha Mame, originally released as a regional exclusive in 2020 for Hokkaidō and Tōhoku before being re-released in subsequent years to coincide with edamame season in July.
The 2024 version incorporates edamame powder containing 65% dadacha mame, a variety of edamame from Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, known as the “king of edamame” for its distinctive sweetness, aroma, and umami depth.

The chips had a golden yellow hue with a slight green tinge and an aromatic, slightly sweet soybean fragrance reminiscent of salted-boiled edamame. They were thick-cut, approximately 1 mm in thickness, and varied in size, measuring around 3–5 cm in diameter.

From the first bite, the chips delivered a satisfying crisp crunch, with immediate edamame notes. An initial sweetness greeted the palate before unfolding into a deep umami richness, revealing an unmistakable edamame flavour. The more the chips were chewed, the more their sweet, nutty umami became pronounced, complementing the rich potato base and lingering through to the last bite. Despite the initial sweetness, the overall flavour profile was firmly savoury, with a well-balanced texture and taste that made this a unique and worthwhile repurchase.
This Calbee Kataage Potato Dadacha Mame contained 60 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2024.
