The Nippon Yell Dried Fruit Wakayama Nankō Ume Umeshu no Ume features dried and candied nankō ume grown in Wakayama Prefecture. These plums had previously been used in the production of umeshu.

Each piece measured approximately 2 x 1 x 0.7 cm, with a smooth, dark brown surface lightly coated in fine sugar. They emitted a sweet, plummy aroma reminiscent of umeshu, though without any alcoholic undertones.

The initial bite offered a cool sweetness from the sugar coating, which gave way to a chewy texture. As the sugar dissolved, the musky notes of ume emerged, transitioning from a sweet tanginess to the richer, apricot-like flavour characteristic of nankō ume. Small, semi-firm pieces of plum skin added a pleasant crunch to the finish. The flavour progression mirrored the experience of eating a sweeter, more tender version of the Choya Umeshu no Ume, yet without any trace of alcohol in either taste or aroma. The product perfectly captured the musky, apricot-like sweetness of these post-production plums, offering a unique balance of candied sweetness and natural ume flavour. We would gladly repurchase them.
