This is the Saxby’s Double Sarsaparilla, which is described as being ‘small batch crafted using double strength flavour for distinct old-style taste’.

The drink was an opaque brown-black colour with a sweet liquorice aroma and high carbonation. Served chilled, bold notes of wintergreen came through at the head of each sip with a hint of acidity and developed with sharper liquorice notes in the body before giving way to sweet vanilla notes in the finish. The high carbonation cleansed the sweetness from the palate, leaving a hint of liquorice lingering in the aftertaste. The strength of the sarsaparilla flavour balanced well with the sweetness of the drink.

Compared to other brands, it was indeed stronger in sarsaparilla flavour, and notably, sharper and less acidic than Bundaberg. While the liquorice flavour in this Saxby’s was on par with Schweppes, the overall flavour had far greater depth and complexity than the other brands we’re tried. We’re fans.
