Vedan Sikdang Purple & Golden Sweet Potato

This is the Vedan Sikdang Purple & Golden Sweet Potato, a fried sweet potato snack featuring purple and golden sweet potato varieties, lightly seasoned with salt and sugar. It contained 20% purple sweet potato and 80% golden sweet potato.

The sweet potato fries presented as thin sticks, measuring approximately 5 mm wide, 2 mm thick and 3–6 cm in length. The purple variety ranged in colour from pink to almost black, while the golden variety had a vivid yellow hue. Both were coated in a fine dusting of salt and sugar. Aroma was relatively non-descript, offering little beyond a general fried-food character, although a hint of rancidity was noticeable in the golden sweet potato.

Initial contact with the purple sweet potato delivered a sweet opening alongside a dense, crisp crunch that persisted through to the finish. After several crunches, earthy sweet potato notes emerged through the mid-palate, introducing a more subtle savoury quality that restrained the initial sweetness. Towards the finish, the flavour was no longer particularly sweet, creating an alternating sweet-salty-sweet-salty progression characteristic of the dan-jjan flavour profile commonly found in Korean snacks.

In contrast, the golden sweet potato had a slight rancid oil flavour on tasting, with little discernible sweet potato character to provide a more substantial flavour base. The difference between the two varieties was sufficiently pronounced that only the purple sweet potato warranted repurchase.

Overall, a sweet potato snack with a sweet opening, an earthy savoury transition and an alternating sweet-salty finish, supported by a dense, persistent crunch. The purple variety offered the more complete flavour profile, while the golden variety was compromised by a noticeable rancid oil character.
