Wasabi peas – dehydrated peas coated in wasabi seasoning – are a moreish snack packing a healthy spicy and crunchy kick. So when I spotted these Calbee Harvest Snaps Baked Pea Crisps Wasabi I was excited for what I thought were dehydrated whole snow peas coated in wasabi seasoning.

To my surprise, these were not whole snow peas, but more like corn puffs made with peas in a snow pea shape. They’re made with 65% whole green peas and have less fat and more fibre than regular potato chips. Surprise aside, these were tasty snacks – each ‘pea’ is crispy and light and not the least bit oily. The smell of wasabi was evident from opening the package, but it’s a savoury flavour that came through on tasting before the pleasant spiciness of the wasabi mid-bite. The wasabi taste is not particularly strong – nothing to clear your sinuses – but it’s a healthy kick, and together with the lightness of these snacks, it keeps you returning.
