Calbee Kataage Potato Shio Wasabi

This is the Calbee Kataage Potato Shio Wasabi, seasoned with wasabi produced in Azumino, Nagano Prefecture.

The chips varied in size, with most pieces measuring approximately 3–4 cm in diameter and around 1.5 mm in thickness. They carried a yellow to golden hue and a mellow fried potato aroma.

On tasting, the chips delivered the firm, satisfying crunch expected of kataage-style crisps. The wasabi flavour appeared immediately as a sharp tingle on the tongue, persisting throughout each bite. This initial heat gradually gave way to the warm savoury notes of salt and potato before the herbaceous, slightly sweet aromatics of the wasabi became more prominent. The pungency reached a near sinus-clearing intensity in the finish, balanced by the underlying savoury richness.

Overall, this was an addictive and well-balanced combination of heat, savoury depth, and aromatic freshness, celebrating the distinctive character of wasabi without overwhelming the palate.

This Calbee Kataage Potato Shio Wasabi contained 60 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2025.
