Calbee Jagabee Zunda

This is the Calbee Jagabee Zunda, a Tōhoku-limited release inspired by the region’s zunda and made with edamame powder.

Each box contained six individually sealed 15 g bags. The fries measured approximately 0.8 x 0.8 cm in cross-section and ranged in length from 2 to 8 cm. They were pale yellow in hue, covered in fine salt, and carried a distinct edamame aroma, more vegetal than the sweetened scent typically associated with zunda.

On tasting, a fine salt coating delivered an immediate savoury note, followed by the signature Jagabee crunch—deep, satisfying, and consistent throughout each piece. The potato base was rich, and as the fry progressed, a pronounced edamame flavour developed. The green, vegetal character of the edamame gave the potato a nuance akin to slightly undercooked French fries, particularly in the second half of the bite. This contrast added complexity rather than detracting, and the overall experience remained pleasant and distinctive. A thoughtful regional souvenir from Tōhoku.

This Calbee Jagabee Zunda contained 90 g (15 g x 6 bags). It was produced in Japan and purchased in Matsushima, Japan in 2024.
