A big icon of some sort seems a prerequisite for a regional tourist destination and the giant fruit bowl outside Bilpin Fruit Bowl seems to do the service for Bilpin.

We were at Bilpin Fruit Bowl to pick up one of their Apple Pies ($7.00, small), as it was rated as one of the top three in the region. Their pie was made with a shortcrust pastry top and base and dusted in icing sugar.

Unfortunately, this pie didn’t live up to our expectations from the start as the pie base was soggy from condensation in the pie tin. The shortcrust pastry had its own sweetness, which was amplified by the icing sugar on top, and became overwhelming with the sweetness of the apple filling, which lacked both bite and acidity to cut through the sweetness. Overall, this apple pie was comparable to Nanna’s Apple Pie from the supermarket and lacked the expected finesse of a fresh apple pie from a bakery.
